Use a window function: SELECT salary FROM (SELECT salary, DENSE_RANK() OVER (ORDER BY salary DESC) rnk FROM employees) t WHERE rnk = N. Alternatively LIMIT 1 OFFSET N-1 over distinct sorted salaries, or a correlated subquery counting greater salaries.
