## Two-phase commit (2PC) 2PC is a protocol to commit a transaction **atomically across multiple nodes** (e.g. two databases) — either all commit or none do. A **coordinator** drives two phases: 1. **Prepare (voting):** coordinator asks every participant *can you commit?* Each does the work, writes it to its log, locks the rows, and votes **yes/no**. 2. **Commit:** if **all** voted yes, the coordinator tells everyone to **commit**; if any voted no (or timed out), everyone **aborts**.
